Community/Outreach

The Outreach office of the Consortium in Latin American and Caribbean Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University, based in the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at Duke University, administers a number of programs. We partner with schools, colleges, businesses, and non-profits throughout North Carolina to develop and make accessible educational resources regarding Latin America and the Caribbean. In particular we provide teacher workshops and specialized curriculum for K-16 educators.

Examples of current partnerships and initiatives are listed below. If you want to collaborate with these partnerships, have additional ideas for collaborations or want to be placed on our listserv, please contact Outreach Program Coordinator LeAnne Disla, at leanne.disla@duke.edu.

Teacher Travel Tours -- Alexander County Teacher Travel Tour

Through this collaborative partnership, teachers and principals from Alexander County will travel this summer to Guanajuato, Mexico. In preparation for this trip, a series of workshops is being provided to the teachers and administrators that strive to meet the needs of Alexander County and allow teachers to develop curriculum related to the themes of the program.

Latin American and Caribbean Book Clubs

At Shepard Middle School in Durham, teachers and students have collaborated with the Consortium's Outreach Office to read and discuss two books by Dominican author Julia Alvarez. From these book clubs, Shepard has developed meaningful curriculum that can be implemented in classrooms, sister school partnerships with schools in the Dominican Republic, and pen pal relationships with Dominican students and teachers.

Latin American Film Festival

The annual Latin American Film Festival is a community event that features films from all over Latin America. If you want to hold a film viewing at your school or for your club or organization, please contact us. The Consortium has a collection of more than 400 films in English and Spanish, which are free for the public to borrow. To browse our online film catalog, click here.

Partner Schools

The Consortium's Outreach Office has partnered with Burton Elementary, Shepard Middle, and Hillside High School in Durham to bring Latin America and Caribbean-related programs to their schools.
