Partner Schools

The Outreach Office is very interested in partnering with you to bring Latin America and Caribbean-related programs to your school. To develop a partnership, send your ideas for collaboration to Outreach Program Coordinator LeAnne Disla at leanne.disla@duke.edu. All ideas are welcome!

At Shepard Middle School, for example, teachers have collaborated with Outreach to form a book club based on two books written by Dominican author Julia Alvarez: In the Time of the Butterflies and Before We Were Free. Shepard teachers work with Outreach on a weekly basis to discuss issues raised in these books, ranging from culture and family to politics and freedom. Shepard has also expanded their collaboration to the Dominican Republic, forming pen pal relationships with students and teachers in Dominican schools.

In addition to book clubs, partner schools might propose any of the following programs:

  • Presentations on a region or country in Latin America/Caribbean
  • Bringing guest speakers to campuses
  • Specialized curriculum development for K-16 classrooms
  • Teacher workshops on themes such as immigration, globalization, the arts, or the environment
  • One-on-one classroom support for educators teaching themes related to Latin American/Caribbean
