Latin American Labor History Conference 2008
Nurturing Hope, Deepening Democracy, and Combating Inequalities: An Assessment of Lula's Presidency
Duke University
John Hope Franklin Center, Room 240
May 27 - 28, 2008
The objective of this year's LALHC is to develop a sturdy and politically sophisticated assessment of the achievements, as well as shortcomings, of Lula’s administration and the PT in light of the trajectory of Brazilian popular and electoral struggles in the future. Conducted largely in Portuguese, this two-day research conference will be based on advance papers while the organizers will provide an overview discussion document and a systematization of the existing literature in many different languages. This conference is part of an ongoing program of research which began with three panels at the Montreal meeting of the Latin American Studies Association in September 2007, and will continue through the upcoming LASA Congress in Rio de Janeiro scheduled for 11-14 June 2009, with publications to quickly follow. We believe this initiative is not only timely but will contribute to a better understanding of contemporary Latin American politics and society as a whole.
The conference is funded by the Arts and Sciences Research Council, the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS), the Trent Foundation, History Department, and the Vice Provost for International Affairs at Duke, with additional support from Brazilian sources including the Fundacão Perseu Abramo and the Conselho de Desenvolvimento Econômico e Social. Support is also acknowledged from Deborah Jakubs, the Rita DiGiallonardo Holloway University Librarian and Duke Vice Provost for Library Affairs. For more information, contact co-organizers John D. French (History, Duke) and Alexandre Fortes (History, Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro).
