Politics of Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean

  February 8-9 2008

Dear Friends and Colleagues:

We are writing to invite each and every member of our Latin Americanist community to join us for our fifth annual Carolina and Duke Consortium conference entitled "Politics of Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean" to be held on February 8-9 2008, at Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill.

The central goal of the conference is to provide a forum for faculty and graduate students in the social sciences, humanities, and professional schools in which to engage one another in a constructive exchange of ideas derived from a variety of methodological perspectives, divergent theoretical frameworks, and differing thematic interests. Of particular relevance is that scholarship that addresses the role played by artists, musicians, performers, writers, intellectuals, and other producers of culture in the construction of national myths and the representation of social justice. The conference seeks to explore the ways that the State and private sectors act to promote, shape, and otherwise influence the processes of cultural production and how cultural production determines the development of historical memory. These issues have direct impact on the development of political culture, national identity, gender norms, and the normative systems in which the conduct of daily life is experienced. The conference is intended to provide a venue for intellectual debate, exchange of ideas, and the development of collegiality.
