Goals for Undergraduate Education in the Certificate Program
Deepen intellectual inquiry and knowledge of Latin America and the Caribbean by offering a wide variety of interdisciplinary courses, academic conferences, language training, and access to visiting scholars from this region of the world. Expose students to the rich artistic and cultural traditions of Latin America and the Caribbean in an effort to develop cross-cultural fluency. Challenge students to develop moral arguments about issues of social justice in Latin America and the Caribbean . Prepare students to become active agents of social change in academics, business, non-governmental organizations, and many other careers dealing with Latin America and the Caribbean .
Learning Objectives for the Certificate
Certificate Recipients will:
Develop a comprehensive knowledge base of the history, culture, and politics of Latin America & the Caribbean .
Be able to effectively apply research methodologies acquired in their major discipline(s) to understanding social, political, and cultural processes in Latin America & the Caribbean .
Develop strong oral and written communication skills in one or more of the following languages: Spanish, Portuguese, French, (or other languages including: Aymara, Yucatec Maya, Quechua, or Haitian Creole).
Develop a cultural and moral awareness about the social, political, and economic challenges with which the people of Latin America & the Caribbean struggle. This awareness is meant to teach students that they can become active agents of social change.
The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at Duke offers an interdisciplinary Undergraduate Certificate in Latin American Studies, which students can earn in conjunction with their bachelor's degree. The purpose of this certificate is to deepen the students' knowledge of Latin America and the Caribbean by including courses from different disciplines in their study of the region within a framework of close faculty guidance. Completion of the certificate requirements will academically recognize the students' intensive, interdisciplinary study of the realities of Latin American and Caribbean societies and cultures.
